A 650-Year-Old Craft, Carved by Hand
ZenCarve is a small studio in Yueqing, China — the birthplace of boxwood carving, a national intangible cultural heritage with over 650 years of history.
We work with boxwood, a slow-growing tree nicknamed "the thousand-year dwarf" because it grows only a few centimeters a year. Its dense, fine grain makes it the favorite medium of master carvers — and the reason each piece can hold every knife mark for generations.
Our process is honest: machine-assisted roughing to shape, followed by fully hand-carved finishing — the soul of the work, the expression in every face, is done by human hands. Each figure carries the patience of the material and the hand of the maker.
