The Laughing Buddha (Budai, or Hotei in Japan) is the most recognized Buddhist figure in the West: the round belly, the wide grin, the robe falling open. He stands for contentment, generosity, and the kind of joy that comes from wanting less. In homes across Asia his statue sits near the entrance, where the first thing you see in the morning is someone laughing.
